The history in english, for worldwide.
Hello,

I have been thinking about sending this mail, but I didn’t know where to start.
Well, here goes. I will try to be brief and begin at the beginning.
My niece Marta, who is 24 years old, has been diagnosed of leukaemia and is already under treatment with chemotherapy, and luckily her state is good. However, the medical team she is under at the Hospital Vall d’Hebron in Barcelona has informed us that she must undergo a bone marrow transplant if she is to recover completely. The transplant must be alogenic (donor compatible) because it is not possible to use her own bone marrow due to the type of leukaemia she has.

The search process for a compatible donor is on an international basis since all the donor banks and registers are interconnected, and we have not lost hope of finding a donor with the necessary compatibility rating to be able to do the transplant. However, it is highly complex to obtain such compatibility because the possible combinations are so large, and the success of a transplant depends to a large degree on such a compatibility.

At present there are around 10 million possible donors listed with different registers. One of these registers is REDMO, which was created a few years ago sponsored by Josep Carreras and the Foundation of the same name.

This is the most difficult part for me. I would like to appeal to you, to take a few moments of your time to give a little thought about this and to consider visiting the Fundación Carreras website http://www.carreras.org to find out how to help and, why not, maybe become bone marrow donors.

I have been a donor for over ten years and I have always enjoyed the thought that one day I would be called to make a donation and give the present of a little bit of life to a needy person. Destiny has again called at my door in the form of leukaemia in the family and I can’t help because I am not compatible, but maybe you are, for Marta or for somebody else who is in the same position as her. As for myself, I hope that one day I will be able to help too.

Please, do find out about the Fundación Carreras and REDMO’s procedures. It is a simple thing to become a donor and for the recipient it is an unforgettable present.

While I am here, and using my experience as blood donor, now as plasma donor and, I hope, shortly to become platelet donor, I would like to ask you to pay a visit to a blood bank and become donors since there is a great need of blood and its derivatives which are also employed in treating leukaemia patients who require frequent blood transfusions.

It it is possible for you to spread this message, I would be very grateful, but not, of course if it would cause any trouble to anybody or any organizations.

Again, my sincere thanks for your time.

Xavier Miquel, Marta's uncle.

...la història.
Hola a tots:
